Tool 2.5: Using AI to Create Customer Outcomes in Your Discovery Research

Use AI to get a head start on Discovery Research using Blueprinter software's AI function

BACKGROUND

What does the AI function do?

It allows you to run AI queries that can return customer outcomes for your project.

When should this be used?

It should be used as often as it can provide useful information. It's recommended to use the AI function before interviewing customers to get a head start on outcome gathering.

Does this mean that we don't need to interview customers?

Not at all. This is part of the divergent Discovery phase. We don't have any idea how significant or real these problems are.

When conducting a Blueprinting project during Discovery Research, your goal is to first obtain a complete list of customer outcomes. Of course, you can get these from customers, but additionally, you can get a massive head start with AI.

Let's walk through the steps to complete.

HOW DO I USE THE AI FUNCTION?

Step 1: Navigate to a Discovery Noteboard, and select the "AI" button.

Step 2: Select the five AI settings:

These are:

Our product/offering type: The product in question will ground your analysis in your particular solution.

Customer business type: Your customer business type provides critical context.

Customer job function: Your customer's role, identity, or persona. This is the role of the person you'd like to "interview" with AI.

Customer job-to-be-done: Your customer's goal, objective, or problem to be solved. This is the topic you'd like to query AI about. It's best when written as a job statement, meaning it should begin with a verb. It should ALWAYS begin with a VERB. Gerund versions of verbs should be fine as well.

# Problems to generate: this is the precision of the outcomes you're seeking. The higher the number, the greater the precision; you will get more detail for each outcome. The lower the number, the lower the precision with greater abstraction.

Step 3: Accept the Outcomes

The outcomes will initial be grey and you will need to manually Accept Them for them to enter the Problem set of your Discovery Noteboard. For your convenience, you can use the "Accept All" button.

"Accepting" is a critical part of the process since some AI results may not be reliable. It's up to you, the practitioner, to look at each one and determine whether to accept a problem or not. If not accepted, it will not show up in a PDF output document and cannot be selected as a "Top Pick" to continue throughout the process. Further, if you do not "Accept" them, then this information will NOT be retained.

Step 4: Examine the Outcomes

Read through the Outcome title and note that the customer is listed as "AI," so you'll have a record of this for later.

Step 5: Craft an Outcome Statement

Write an outcome statement that can be processed within New Product Blueprinting Step 3, Preference Research.

The AI function is not only a great way to get a head start with your Discovery Research, but also, is a productive method to "test" various scopes to see what get a sense of what you can expect to hear from actual customers.
